This piece features a classic chess poem attributed to the medieval Jewish polymath Abraham ibn Ezra in rich walnut ink. Laid out in the form of a chess board, this piece invites you to engage with history through an immersive and interactive experience. The title is an invitation: you are the second player, encountering ibn Ezra across the board in a moment bridging the centuries.
Each individual piece is hand-signed and uniquely identified according to its place in the game: the small edition by coordinate (e.g., "a1"), the medium by specific color and piece (e.g., "Black Queen"), and the full-size by piece type (e.g., "Queen’s Rook"). A calligraphic carmen figuratum in which Judah Halevi’s riddle graphically manifests as its own solution. Rendered in a striking transition from walnut ink to a cochineal red, the work represents the "lifeblood" of Jewish thought (the ink of tradition) being poured from the inkwell of history into the present.

This “visual Kaddish” mourns the 1242 Burning of the Talmud in Paris, centering on the poem by Meir of Rothenburg meticulously arranged into the architecture of one of the talmudic pages used as "evidence" in the trial that led to the flames. While the scorched perimeter marks a permanent physical scar, the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet are ensnared in the marginal scrollwork, escaping the fire to ascend heavenward.
Paralleling the dimensions of the manuscripts lost in the Burning, this print is available in limited Folio (Full-size) and Quarto (Medium) editions.
